On March 22, 2016, Brussels experienced its deadliest attacks since World War II when coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic State (IS) targeted Brussels Airport and the Maelbeek metro station, resulting in 32 deaths and over 300 injuries. 

In response to these tragic events, V-Europe was established in 2016 by victims of terrorism (VoT) as a crucial organization fostering solidarity and mutual support among victims in Belgium and beyond. It provided a safe space for victims to connect, share experiences, and advocate collectively for their rights.

In January 2017, V-Europe presented their concerns to the Belgian parliamentary enquiry commission investigating the attacks, highlighting the plight of victims and the inadequacies of existing support systems. This testimony underscored the need for better communication and support for victims, leading to V-Europe becoming a key partner for official bodies in advocating for victims' rights and well-being.

Through their efforts, V-Europe has significantly influenced policies to address victims' needs, ensuring they receive the recognition and support necessary for healing and rebuilding their lives. Their work has not only supported individual victims but also contributed to improving victim support systems across Europe.
